WOOD

Knowing the Land

Cabeceiras de Basto, March 2024

from trunk to piece
with carpenter José Machado

With rudimentary tools like saws, axes, hammers, and wedges, carpenter José Machado guided us with his experienced hands along the paths of landra’s forest. Among various mature trees, a straight oak with over twenty years old stood out, amidst other trunks emerging from the same root system. With axe, wedges, mallet, and saw, and with utmost care, the top of the oak bent to the ground.

With sharp eyes on stretched lines, plumb bobs and central axes were marked. We also learned to level and transport the trunk with minimal effort. Then, in an outdoor classroom setting, Mr. Machado picked up various woods collected from the walk to tell us about their quirks and feats, their strengths and weaknesses: the oak that cracks, the eucalyptus that expands and twists, the dense olive tree, the light and resinous pine... The waiting time, the water, the tightening, the bending.

Now we are focused on managing forest systems common lands for the production of high-quality structural wood, while also protecting the territory and people from fire risks. We will work in partnership with local entities for the sustainable improvement of forest resources, which will be useful for the local population and provide them with greater autonomy and independence from external economies.
