LAND MARKET

Cabaré Brutal
CCOP MUSIC HALL
NOVEMBER 2020
Porto, Portugal

show act organized by José Oliveira and Rick Lins

Two human figures atop a table put on shirts, suits, and ties, transforming into businessmen who buy and sell land, production factors, agro-industrial capital, and lives.

In the background, images are projected showing a divided landscape: the deep rurality of a depopulated Iberia set against the standardization of the territory to meet agricultural efficiency standards—the contrast between hands stained by the soil and the destruction of that same soil through heavy machinery and toxic chemicals.
When things begin to go wrong—as crises and collapses ensue—the two humans are forced to strip off their attire, revealing themselves as cabaret performers. Amidst this, whenever a specific food market category was mentioned, actual products were pulled from beneath the table and handed to the audience, who dined while awaiting the next act.
